Chocolate Mint Spirulina Smoothie Bowl

Craving mint-chocolate ice cream? I got you! This detox smoothie combines ingredients you normally don’t picture together: spirulina, cacao, and mint. But trust me – this smoothie is decadently delicious! The rich, earthy flavour of cacao pairs wonderfully with the spirulina, and the freshness of the mint pairs amazingly with the spirulina and dark chocolate. This vegan chocolate mint spirulina smoothie bowl is loaded with filling fibre and plant-based protein, and it’s a delicious way to include this popular blue-green algae into your day.

Spirulina is a complete protein with full amino acid profiles, and it contains about 60% protein, making it one of the most superior plant protein sources available. Spirulina packs quite a nutritional punch. It has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and may help to fight free radical damage. All you need is a tablespoon to get 4 grams of protein! What does spirulina taste like? To be honest, it has an “acquired” taste. Eaten directly, it has a somewhat unpleasant taste – kind of like seaweed. But, when thrown into smoothies or desserts, it’s undetectable. Some people think it has a mild, grassy flavour, others think it's akin to eating lawn clippings.

However, enter cacao. Another superfood in its own right, containing more antioxidants than blueberries and more iron than spinach. Chocolate is a trigger for many people trying to focus on eating more healthfully. However, in certain forms, mainly raw cacao, chocolate offers numerous health benefits. Cacao is best known for promoting heart health. It also has been known to alleviate stress and even help some forms of mild depression. Cacao pairs perfectly with nutrient-rich plant milks. It’s the perfect ingredient to mix up your standard green smoothie and get your chocolate fix all at once!
