Coconut Goji Berry Bliss Balls

I just love bliss balls, they’re so handy to keep on hand for snacking. Lately, I have fallen head over heels in love with goji berries and so I decided to create some energy balls with these little miracle workers. These sweet lil coconut goji berry bliss balls are made with just 4 ingredients: coconut, goji berries, cashews and dates! This recipe is vegan, gluten-free, oil-free and has no added sugar! Can I get a hell yeah!

If you have not tried goji berries before, its flavour lands somewhere between a cranberry and a cherry. They are a little tart, slightly sweet and have a dry, chewy texture. A dried goji berry is a little smaller than a raisin or dried cranberry. I love the sweet and tart flavour and enjoy them on their own or in salads, smoothies, homemade trail mix, added to baking or used in recipes like these energy balls.

Full of superfoods, these bliss balls provide a good dose of antioxidants and protein to keep your body healthy – with the perfect amount of natural sweetness to give you a little energy boost and are a great healthy treat to curb those nasty 3 pm sugar cravings. Considered both a fruit and a herb, goji berries, sometimes called wolf berries or the Tibetan goji, have long been enjoyed in China and the Himalayas for their sweet taste and medicinal properties. They have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years and Tibetan medicine includes these berries in the treatment of everything from kidney and liver problems, to lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, treat psoriasis, depression, allergies and even insomnia.

Further benefits of goji berries:

  • Just 28g of these berries will fulfill 10% of your daily protein requirements!

  • The high amount of vitamin C is great to boost your immune system and protect you and your little ones from the flu.

  • These berries can aid in weight loss. The sweet and yummy taste (plus the added fibre) can help you to have an easier transition from processed sugar to whole foods. My family LOVES to snack on these!

  • Goji berries contain a special antioxidant called zeaxanthin (this antioxidant gives them their beautiful and bright colour). Antioxidants protect cells against breaking down when they’re exposed to elements such as smoke and radiation.

  • Goji berries are fantastic for lowering blood sugar and avoiding sugar crashes. They can also improve sugar tolerance if you slowly substitute these for the processed sugar snacks!
